PEARS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

The main focus of PEARS is prevention, and specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress.  Students develop skills in recognizing certain pediatric distress signs and symptoms using several unique visual cues and working at learning stations. Because typical PEARS students do not regularly treat critically ill children, the course includes video-based simulation so they can actually see and hear critically ill children.

This comprehensive text helps equip those who do not routinely provide care to critically ill children and who are not required to have a PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) credential -- such as physicians, nurses, pre-hospital and in-hospital providers outside of critical care areas, outpatient-clinic staff, and school-based providers -- to identify a pediatric victim at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress, intervene early to stabilize the child, and contact the next level of care early. Readers learn to recognize the signs of impending respiratory failure or shock, initiate the appropriate treatment, and follow recommended procedures for preventing disability and death in children. Comes with a student CD and the PEARS Pocket Reference Card (80-1476). 120 pages, 8 1/2" x 11"

Written Exam
