Heartsaver AED is the AHA training course for lay rescuers who participate in a program of public access defibrillation (PAD).  It focuses on the needs of a lay responder who must perform CPR, relief of FBAO in the responsive victim, and use of an AED.  The 4-hour course includes training in rescue breathing with barrier devices and is ideal for business and groups interested in implementing PAD programs in an environment that serves adult populations.     For locations that are likely to encounter pediatric emergencies, Heartsaver AED can be combined with the infant and child modules of Heartsaver CPR (this will extend the course length by approximately 3 to 3 ½  hours). Defibrillating a victim in cardiac arrest

Participants in a Heartsaver AED Course must achieve a minimum score of 84 % on a written  examination and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPR (adult or infant and child) and use of an AED.  Successful participants are issued a course completion card (a credential).

Structure and function of "AED’s": The Acronyms "AEDs" stand for Automatic External Defibrillators.  The word automatic actually means semiautomatic, because most commercially available AEDs will “advise” the operator that a shock is indicated but will not deliver a shock without an action by the rescuer (The rescuer must push the SHOCK button).  The AED is attached to the patient with adhesive electrode pads.  The device is equipped with proprietary microprocessor-based rhythm analysis system that analyzes the heart rhythm.

By following the devices audio voice prompts (step by step instructions), make sure that nobody touches the victim while the device is anylizing or shocking!

CPR by itself is only 30-40% effective!  Yes the new ratio (30:2) is definitely helping to increase survival rate, but AED's are making the difference!  Its a proven fact that AED's greatly increase the victims chances of survival up to 95%!  *This is of course if the rescuers begin reviving the person within 3-5 mins!
