Course Information:

It has been extensively pilot-tested in the field. Although the first aid presented in the course can be used in any setting, the course was specifically designed for emergencies occurring in the workplace.

This course was developed on the basis of evidence-based guidelines. Evidence-based guidelines are important because:
- The process determines the strength of the scientific evidence that supports the recommended first aid interventions. We have included only those assessments and interventions that have been shown to be effective.
- The process includes a built-in mechanism to periodically review and update the evidence.
The purpose of the Heartsaver First Aid Course is to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies at the worksite and give first aid. Some rescuers are required to take the course as apart of their employer’s effort to comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)regulations. For others, whose work may involve interaction with the public, such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, flight attendants, and lifeguards, taking this course may be a requirement of their job description.
The Heartsaver First Aid Course was developed to meet a widespread request for an AHA course that integrates training in first aid, CPR, and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). In designing the Heartsaver First Aid Course, the American Heart Association used the following guidelines:
Information in the course must be evidence-based. The goal of the course is to train laypeople in first aid assessments and actions that have been shown to make a difference in mortality or morbidity rates. Any topics and materials that are usually taught in a first aid course but are unrelated to this goal were not included in the course.
- The curriculum must be designed to help participants achieve knowledge and skills objectives in a time-efficient manner. Careful attention has been given to content and design, support materials, and instructor focus.
- Assessments and actions must be simplified and technical jargon kept to a minimum. For example, the term “choking” is used instead of “foreign-body airway obstruction.” In designing this course, the goal of the Task Force on First Aid was to train laypeople rather than nurses, emergency medical technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
Although this course is designed for the worksite, the concepts taught in the course are applicable anywhere. The course must have maximum flexibility. For the reason some sections in the Heartsaver First Aid course are elective. It is the responsibility of the instructor to familiarize himself/herself with participants’ worksites and to tailor the course to fit their needs.
The Heartsaver First Aid Course consists of 6 sections. Three of the sections are required and 3 are elective, although 2 sections are highly recommended. There are 2 versions of the manual: Heartsaver First Aid With CPR and AED comprises all 6 sections of the course; Heartsaver First Aid comprises the required sections plus Environmental Emergencies.
The section on General Principles covers the following topics:
-

-
Post-emergency actions, including preparing reports, coping with the rescuer’s emotional reaction, and discretion in sharing private information

The section on AED is similar to that in other AHA courses. It can be taught only in c The section on CPR has been modified from other AHA courses and integrated with first. For example, information on choking and signs of heart attack and stroke have been moved to the section on Medical Emergencies, information on opening the airway and checking for breathing ahs been moved to the presentation of assessment in the section on General Principles, and information on opening the airway with the jaw-thrust procedure has been moved to the section on Injury Emergencies. onjunction with the section on CPR or to participants who presents a valid AHA CPR course completion card or meet AHA reciprocity requirements.
The length of the Heartsaver First Aid Course depends on the number of section selected (approximate times):
